that “If you can say Schwarzenegger, you can say Esparza” quote got a looot more notes that i expected, and i’ve seen a few people reblog it saying “esparza isn’t even that difficult to pronounce” so i thought i would shed some light on the actual issue.

pronunciation isn’t the problem. the problem was that raúl could not get roles for latino characters because he did not fit into the stereotypes that is perpetuated by hollywood.

I can’t tell you how many people would tell me to change my name, and just be like “well you don’t look like a Raúl.” […] I don’t know what people expected but that stereotype of what latin is, I didn’t fit it.

[…] I didn’t sound like it, I didn’t look like it and I couldn’t get hired for it. And then they’d see my name and they would say “well you’re not that, so change your name.” And I used to very proudly say “If you can say Schwarzenegger, you can say Esparza.”

here’s the whole interview.
